"Crockett & Tubbz: The Mixtape, Vol. 1"

In the tradition of many great duos, myself and longtime homie Jaycee decided to join forces under the collective moniker of Crockett & Tubbz, or C&T. For those that know our history as friends/DJs, you know that we're like Frick & Frack, two peas in a pod, if you will. Over the years we've built up a pretty noteworthy status both here in Atlanta and also across the country (and internationally as well in the case of Jaycee), both in radio and clubs from the early 90's til now. In this mix you'll get a little glimpse into what you can musically expect from these two, as in this installment we give you a dash of 80's Pop/R&B, classic Hip-Hop, Funk/Soul and everything in between. Grab yourself a Bahama Mama and let Dunny Crockett and Reekardo Tubbz set your New Year off right. Enjoy!!!

Big Daddy Kane "Set It Off" (Jaycee's VIP Records Edit)
December 08, 2013 10:10 AM PST

i always wondered what Big Daddy Kane would sound like over a uptempo West Coast flavored jam so on a quick whim i decided to put this together.

the sample comes from the Big Jacks' Discotechnology Edit of L.J. Reynolds 1982 sleeper jam "Trust In Me", which is a BANGER in its own right. i took a couple parts, added the familiar JB guitar riff and even re-did Mr. Cee's original scratches to keep most of the OG flavor intact.

overall a very different feel from Marley Marl's sparse original that we're all used to but in time you'll appreciate it, lol.

once again, this isn't meant to be the "definitive" 80's mix per se…but damn, i REALLY had fun putting this together. after listening to this you should be inspired to come to my "I Love The 80's" jam on Friday, December 13th at The Soundtable where i'll be dropping classics like these on the turntables ALL NIGHT alongside Dres Tha Beatnik who will be your master of ceremony for the evening.

Peter Phillips. Christopher Martin.

Pete Rock. DJ Premier.

Two names inextricably linked as two of the seminal producers of Hip-Hop's Golden Era. The sounds of their respective groups (Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth and GangStarr), helped to shape the soundtracks of many of our teenage and young adult years. Their work with other groups, such as INI, Naughty By Nature, A Tribe Called Quest, M.O.P, Jeru The Damaja, Group Home, Da Youngstas, Public Enemy and others, still resonate to this day among the stellar music of the era.

at The Soundtable on October 17th, DJ Jaycee & Applejac (aka Crockett & Tubbz) alongside Fort Knox as host, took you on a 5 hour journey thru the works of these luminaries, as well as unearthing original samples that they used to craft their classic beats. here's part one.

no tracklist necessary, but i'm in my 80's pop/r&b bag real heavy this go round (except for the Organized Konfusion/Fam-Lee/Doug E. Fresh tunes at the tail end). this was also the first brand new episode of "Eargasms" on Fresh Radio (itsfreshradio.com). salute to my homie DJ Bee for adding me to the roster, you can hear it LIVE every Friday afternoon at 3pm EST and if you don't catch it then, it re-airs on Sunday nights at 9pm EST.
